No September Program Meeting

There will be no program meeting for September.  Instead the club will present the annual Gem, Mineral, Fossil, Jewelry, and Bead Show.

See the show page for more information.

No August program meeting

As a reminder, the club does not hold regular/program meetings in August or September.  The August meeting is replaced by the annual picnic, and the September meeting is replaced by the club show.

July Meeting – Thursday, July 20 – 7:30 PM

Time for the monthly meeting.

The program for the meeting will be a talk by Wayne Steinmetz, a member of Southern Appalachian Mineral Society (SAMS) in Asheville. He will present on mineral identification, although the choice of topic was left open.

Wayne Steinmetz earned an AB in chemistry from Oberlin College and an AM and PhD in chemistry from Harvard University. He is a physical chemist whose research focused on the molecular structure and spectroscopy of biologically active compounds. He taught for 37 years at Pomona College and is presently Professor Emeritus of Chemistry. At Pomona, he worked closely with members of its Geology Department. He was also a Boy Scout Leader and earned the Silver Beaver award. Since 1984 he has been a volunteer with the USFS and NPS with an emphasis on the maintenance and construction of hiking trails. He sings in 3 choirs. The focus of his mineral collection is obtaining examples of all 32 crystallographic point groups.

Welcome to the new FGMC Web Site!

After years of the old, familiar site, FGMC has taken a step forward into a new, more modern web site.

The new web site is being published in WordPress.  This function will provide a lot more options than our old HTML format page.  (Any non-techies – this just means that the web page can be a bit more active.)

The front page will now be a communications area, where recent comments and notices can be quickly found.  It will also allow for other members to post comments.

Additional pages will include newsletters (archived  in addition to the most recent), photos from field trips and other events, and other information.

The new format will also make it easier for other club members to contribute.

2017 Show Signup is Ready

Once again we are using the “Sign Up Genius” web site to allow members to volunteer for slots for the upcoming show.   The link for this year’s site is:  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f054aabaf2fa2f85-2017

For this year there are only three categories for the slots during the show:   Ticket Sales (front door), Geode & Grab Bag Sales (club corner), and Geode Cutting (club corner).  As usual we are looking for two people for each hour for each function.

Of course there is also Set-Up Day, Dealer Dinner, and Take-Down Day which can all use all the help we can get.
